FAREWELL TO A FRIEND By G.M. Boyle Peacefully and quietly, as he had dwelt amongst us, Father John Fagan, our dearly beloved pastor emeritus, died in his sleep, October 4, 1978. He arrived in Point Lookout, as our new pastor, 26 years ago, and in a most efficient manner, without fanfare, quietly took the reins and responsibilities of our parish in a growing community. The establishment of a new parochial school, in a co-operative venture with the two Long Beach Parishes was a unique and new concept which through the years has proven itself. A complete renovation of our church and a modernization of the "Rec Hall" plus the beautification of the church When the ecumenical call came, the worshipers of the Community Church of Point Lookout and the parishioners of the Miraculous Medal Church of Point Lookout were amongst the first in the nation to hold joint services and to join forces undertaking community programs for the unity and betterment of all, a true mark of leadership by minister and priest. Perhaps, least known, but by far most important was the help and solace he gave to so very many needing it over the years. Always in confidence, he helped those in trouble and jealously protected the knowledge of such help from being publicized. He generously and wholeheartedly supported the Long Beach Hospital and many other worthwhile projects. His friends from all parts of the world frequently stopped by at "his little parish by the sea" to tarry a few hours or a few days and most of them became friends of many of us here at the Point. Yes, Father John has gone for a well deserved rest but he shall be remembered with love and prayers. We offer condolences to his family his brothers, Father Peter, Father Larry, Father Tommy and Bernard, and to Bernard's wife, Violet and children, his beloved nephew and niece John and Rosemary. Please remember him in your prayers. |
